Tortuga is a planned community and future development of Wellen Park (formerly West Villages) near Venice, Florida. The community covers a small area near the intersection of West River Road and South Tamiami Trail. The community itself will consist of three streets arranged in a triangle around a central water feature. These will be Tortuga Cay Drive, Balfour Street, and Fishhawk Trail. In addition to the two community ponds, the area will also preserve some lush natural wetlands and an open area for recreation.

About Tortuga

Tortuga is 20 minutes from downtown Venice, and a few more minutes west of that are Venice Beach and the barrier islands of Florida’s scenic Gulf Coast.

Tortuga’s neighboring communities within Wellen Park are Oasis (immediately to the west) and Renaissance beyond that. The future site of Downtown Wellen Park is a few minutes past that, at the intersection of West Villages Parkway and South Tamiami Trail. This area is slated to host a number of entertainment, dining, and shopping venues. This neighborhood will also have a lake and kids play area.

Things to Do In & Around Tortuga & Wellen Park

Residents of Tortuga will inhabit an ideal location between the urban conveniences and luxury to the west and the wild beauty of inland Florida to the east.

A short distance east of Tortuga is Myakka River along with the Myakka River State Park and Myakka State Forest. The Myakka River has a number of landings along its shores giving access to the Gasparilla Sound and Charlotte Harbor to the south, and the Gulf of Mexico beyond that to the west.

Closer to Tortuga, residents can enjoy Blue Heron Park and Deer Prairie Creek Preserve. To the west, there is the CoolToday Park, a ballpark that hosts regular events and the Atlanta Braves’ spring training camps.

A State College of Florida campus is near CoolToday Park as well as a small shopping area with various fast food and cafe chains, and stores.

The wider area of Wellen Park has many top-class attractions and amenities, from healthcare to golf courses, large community pools, fitness centers and clubhouses.
