Sawgrass was originally platted with 568 lots as a Taylor Woodrow Community in 1997 who built the original homes in that year, which were exceptional. Quality home builder J & J Homes purchased the community in 1998 and built out much of the Sawgrass homes for sale along with Waterford Builders. The remaining 80 available lots were purchased by Neal Communities in 2010 who was the exclusive builder for the remainder of the community. Sawgrass has both single family homes and maintenance free villas. Each offers an option of golf course, lake or preserve views. The community offers the safety and security of a gated community with a staffed guard house at the main entrance off of N. Auburn Rd. Homeowners find that living in a deed restricted community keeps their property values up and makes the appearance of the entire community pristine. It also provides stability although rules can be revised from time to time. At the time of this writing, homes may be leased for a minimum of 3 months and no more than twice a year. Pets are welcome with a 3 pet limit and they must be leashed when outdoors. Owners are expected to pick up after their four legged family members. All lawns are irrigated with sprinkler systems which are hooked up to City of Venice reclaimed water. Commercial vehicles, boats, trailers, and recreational vehicles are not permitted overnight.

When leaving the Island of Venice, proceed east on E. Venice Ave. across U.S. 41 and proceed east several miles to N. Auburn Road. Turn left (north) on N. Auburn Rd. and continue to Sawgrass Blvd. Turn left on Sawgrass Blvd. and proceed to gate house.

Sawgrass has the best of all worlds. It has the Waterford golf course that runs through the community so residents can enjoy the beauty but not pay for the maintenance. The Waterford Golf Club is a 27 hole championship golf course designed by Ted McAnlis. The Waterford Golf Club is a semi-private club where you can play 27 holes of challenging golf in a natural setting with abundant wildlife. You can play any combination of the Turnbury (18 holes), Gleneagles (18 holes) or the Sawgrass (9 holes) courses. The Sawgrass clubhouse has ample room for social activities and has a modern spacious fitness center perfect for toning or buffing up.
