The city of Holmes Beach occupies the larger middle portion of Anna Maria Island off Florida's Gulf Coast and at the mouth of Tampa Bay. Residential and commercial development is continuous along the entire length of the island, as Holmes Beach becomes the city of Anna Maria in the north, and Bradenton Beach in the south.
Holmes Beach is home to the island's largest commercial centers, including Anna Maria Island shops, as well as the main access point to the mainland via Manatee Avenue. Real estate on the island is more modest than many other barrier islands, yet boasts excellent access to the mainland, and top-quality beaches.
Almost 3 miles of fine, white sandy beaches run the western edge of the island, with Manatee Public Beach being the popular spot in Holmes Beach itself. Both residents and visitors alike enjoy these beaches for their fine sand, warm waters, numerous shells and sharks teeth, and amazing facilities.
At Holmes Beach's northern end, an island known as Key Royale hosts many spacious canal properties, as well as the area's only golf course.
Holmes Beach History
The Holmes Beach community was founded by developer Jack Holmes after World War II. The city was incorporated in 1950 and the first canal home was built in 1962. The area grew rapidly in the later part of the century thanks to its relatively affordable real estate prices and modest scale.
