Venice is one of the most desirable spots to live in Florida — and it’s not hard to see why! Between the subtropical climate, scenic beaches, and a charming downtown, living in Venice, FL has multiple benefits.

But living in this beachside town also means living with a rich historical heritage that the city works to extend to today.

We’ll be looking at a few of the historical areas that seek to preserve this town's deep historic legacy.

Historic Train Depot

Located just north of Downtown Venice, many of the people that came to make their homes in Venice, FL in the 1920s came by this train line, which was later used during World War II to supply the Venice Army Air Base with personnel, supplies and equipment.

From 1960 to 1991, the Ringling Bros. and Barnum and Bailey Circus then made this their home during the winter months while they were on hiatus from traveling the country.

While the Venice Train Depot stopped it’s passenger service in 1971, tourists are still invited to check out the beautiful architecture of this historic train station and the retired circus car that still sits on the tracks as a reminder of the one time “Greatest Show on Earth”.

Venice Museum

This museum holds pieces of Venice, FL’s history inside and outside of its walls, as the building itself is a historic site that was repurposed in 1996 from the Triangle Inn, originally built in 1927 just south of Downtown Venice.

Inside, you’ll be able to tour the historic building, as well as browse multiple ever-changing collections and exhibits displaying the rich history of the city, occasional special events and educational programs for youth and adults.

Historic Spanish Point

Just twenty minutes north of Venice, FL, the Historic Spanish point tells the stories of the rich archaeological history of our ancient ancestors that inhabited this area, as well as the stories of  more recent visitors in the 1800s, about 1,000 years after the first known inhabitants.

Learn about history and explore the beautiful gardens in this park that includes a guided tram tour so you don’t miss out on any of the history.

Venice Art Center

For over 60 years, the Venice Art Center has been a mainstay of this town’s thriving art scene, providing local exhibits for residents to enjoy.

Located south of Downtown Venice, the Venice Art Center has an outstanding reputation for building up the Venice art scene by providing artists with classes, spaces to display their works, and programs for building up the community.
