Venice Florida wins Silver Bicycle Friendly Community Designation

Posted by Tracy Jones on Sunday, October 14th, 2012 at 12:22pm.

The City of Venice is the recipient of the Silver Bicycle Friendly Community designation. The award comes from the League of American Bicyclists in Washington, D.C.

To earn the designation, volunteers Monty Andrews and Steve Christian worked with Community Development Director Chad Minor for about three years, to make biking safer and more comfortable in Venice.

Venice already has remarkable assets for those interested in biking. Venetian Waterway Park and Legacy Trail offer about 18 miles of uninterrupted biking and hiking on concrete trails where motor vehicles are not allowed. There are many bike lanes in the city. Even the Venice Police Department has developed a bike patrol of six officers who patrol on bicycles. The city developed a bike trail map, which was printed by Venice Area Beautification Inc., and is available online at the city and VABI websites.

The League offers awards in bronze, silver, gold, platinum and diamond. The designation is good for four years. Already, plans are in the works to increase the level for the next designation for Venice.

A community celebration of the award takes place Friday, Nov. 9 at 4 p.m. at the Historic Venice Train Depot, 303 E. Venice Avenue, where Legacy Trail meets Venetian Waterway Park. Everyone is welcome to attend.
