Rod Breaking Fishing in Venice, Florida

Summer is here and things are heating up…especially the fishing.  Last weekend, we left Marine Max in Venice, Florida for a little fishing.  Little did we know that we would have a “Rod Breaking” day of Sizzling Hot Fishing.  We took a relaxing ride out the Venice Jetties into the beautiful waters of the Gulf of Mexico with partly cloudy skies and calm water.  We went a couple of miles out to a local reef and caught some pin fish which we used for live bait.  Then out to blue water we go.  That’s one the terrific things about Venice, Florida is that you have direct access to the Gulf through the Venice, Jetties.  What a ride!   The water was so smooth, we did 25 MPH on the way out.  We passed schools of dolphin , a leatherback sea turtle and saw flying fish as they took to flight to clear the path of our 27 foot Searay Sundeck.  When we arrived, we were in just over 100 feet of water.  It didn’t take long to hear the sound of line peeling off the reel followed by “Fish On”.  Minutes later, we landed a nice Red Grouper and started planning dinner.

That was just enough to wet our appetite.  The next rod bent over with the familiar sound of the reel as a fish took off with the bait.  David held on tight as he started what would be a long fight.  Within 30 seconds, the rod snapped in half and he was left holding a reel and two feet of fishing rod.  The rest of us were experiencing a combination of comedy and dismay.  After a long fight, David boated a Greater Amberjack which was 40 inches and weighed 25 pounds.    Within a short time, the cooler was so full, we couldn’t close the lid.  We caught Amberjack for the rest of the day.  With the cooler full, we released the rest of our catch and had fun all day.  Exhausted and satisfied we returned to the dock to clean fish and give the boat a good scrub down so it would be clean for the Mother’s Day outing the next day.  But first, time for some fresh fish on the grill.  I love living in Venice.
