Political Pollution

Posted by Tracy Jones on Sunday, October 10th, 2010 at 4:48pm.

We live in the land of the free and have the right to freedom of speech.  This becomes blindingly obvious near election time as political signs pop up like mushrooms after a summer rain.  I believe that whether democrat or republican, conservative or liberal, left wing or right wing, we all have one thing in common.  We get tired of political signs by the end of the elections.   Venice, Florida like every other city is covered with brightly colored, attention grabbing political signs.   I can’t help but wonder if all those political signs equate to pollution and affect the value of properties.

Don’t get me wrong.  The issues are important and who we elect can make a difference.  Political signs, however,  do not express the issues at hand or the  character and integrity of our elected wanna-bees.  The signs merely hope to gain votes through repeated exposure and name recognition.   I wonder if people feel insulted that politicians apparently seem to think we are not intelligent enough to decide who to vote for based on the issues.  Apparently we must be barraged with signage and told who to vote for.  If we don’t believe this to be  true, then we have to admit that excessive signs are not effective after all and do little more than pollute our communities.
