Beggar the Dolphin

Posted by Tracy Jones on Sunday, September 23rd, 2012 at 12:18pm.

Beggar the Dolphin was a friend and icon to boaters, locals and tourists in Nokomis and Venice Florida.  He frequented the area north of the Albee Bridge in the Intracoastal Waterway.  Many weekends, after a lunch at Pop’s Restaraunt, my family would ride north on the IC Waterway hoping to catch a glimpse of him.  He could be seen swimming on his back alongside or in the wake of passing boats.  He hoped to “Mooch”, thus his nickname, some leftover bait or treats from passing boats.  Most would recognize that it is a federal offense to feed wild dolphins and were just hoping to get a closer glimpse.   For two decades, Beggar was loved by all.   His fame led to T-shirts, post cards, and even menu items were named after him.  Beggar’s memory will live on in the smiles on the faces of the children who came to see him. For more information on Nokomis, Florida or Venice, Florida real estate, visit http://gulfshoresrealty.com/
