The Venice Area Audubon Rookery is known world-wide. It is a small island in a pond which is home to a myriad of nesting birds. The rookery is close enough to the shore line to give bird lovers and photographers a terrific vantage point. Some of the birds that reside there are Great Blue Heron, Great Egret, Anhinga, White Ibis, Common Gallinule, Cattle Egret, Snowy Egret and Black-Crowned Night Heron. The birds use the rookery as a protected place to raise their young. They come in great numbers to roost on the island. Nesting season runs from November through May. While you are there, visit the Venice Audubon Center andn its educational exhibits and treat yourself to the butterfly gardens.
