Palm Island Real Estate

Throughout Palm Island, buyers can find a diverse mix of property types; attached villas, duplexes, townhomes and single-family homes.

The majority of the homes for sale on Palm Island are constructed according to the old-Floridian style, reminiscent of Southern Colonial buildings elsewhere. These constructions feature the typical trappings of wrap-around porches, hipped metal roofs, and dormer windows. However, one twist is the tendency to prop these homes up on pilings, placing garages and extra patio space underneath.

The result of this elevated living is even more spectacular views, and cool sea breezes wafting through the homes.

Broken down by area, the southern portion of the island, known as Little Gasparilla, is accessible only via boat, or by foot along the beach. Don Pedro Island Park separates this part of the island from the rest, making it even more cozy and quiet, which is saying a lot.

Don Pedro Island in the center of Palm Island is where the most luxurious properties can be found. Consisting of a series of dredged canals, homes here enjoy private docks (except those with the arguably better beach facing properties) and spacious lots.

Next, Knight Island is home to the Palm Island Resort, which offers a number of privately owned condos and houses. This is also a popular vacation spot, as it also has many properties available for rent.

And finally, Thornton Key in the north is taken up mostly by a nature preserve, but is also home to a few isolated, yet prestigious homes.

Overall, the real estate market on Palm Island offers a rare dose of peace and quiet away from the usual resorts and high-rises typical of other popular destinations on Florida's Gulf Coast. Palm Island is the place to experience authentic island living.

Area Information for Palm Island, Florida

The precise geography of Palm Island is complicated. The single stretch of land that exists today used to be an archipelago of islands that became physically joined together sometime in the 1960s.

Starting in the south, these islands are Little Gasparilla, Don Pedro, Knight Island, and Thornton Key. They are still referred to as separate islands today. However, in the 1980s, Palm Island Resort was built on Knight Island, and gradually the area became known simply as "Palm Island". Eventually, the term "Palm Island" was used to refer collectively to the entire ex-archipelago.

The expanded Palm Island is approximately 7 miles long, and accessible via ferry. It lies just off the coast from Cape Haze, is west of Rotunda West, and south of Englewood and Grove City. The island is separated from Manasota Key to the north by Stump Pass, and Gasparilla Island to the south by Gasparilla Pass.

Palm Island Attractions

Without direct access to the mainland, Palm Island has preserved an impressive amount of natural scenery. Don Pedro Island State Park and Thornton Key Preserve are two highlights, hosting large areas of mangrove forest, and home to a wide variety of birds and animals. In the intervening waterways, you can also see dolphins, manatees, turtles, and herons.

The island is also pleasantly undeveloped, with very few commercial centers or overt tourist attractions. As such, the island maintains a quiet, small-town feel. For example, the island only has one restaurant, "Rum Bay", located in the Palm Island Resort.

The resort on Palm Island is a big attraction for visitors and has also attracted its fair share of permanent residents as well. The resort features four pools, a restaurant and general store, 11 tennis courts, and a fitness center, all of which are accessed solely by walking or taking a golf cart.

The entire island boasts miles of beautiful white-sand beaches on its western side. These beaches are known for their shells and sharks teeth, as well as the world-class fishing.
