Wildlife

Florida has an abundance of wildlife…with species ranging from the urban adapted familiar like raccoons, to the unusual such as the gossamer-wings (butterfly species). Surrounded by water and with rivers and lakes flowing throughout, magnificent birds such as Bald Eagles and the white ibis make their homes…often visible from the homeowners’ windows! They like to feed on our amphibians like salamanders, sirens, and frogs that enjoy Florida as their comfortable natural habitat.

With flowers thriving in our warm, wet climate, butterflies such as “brushfoots,” metalmarks, snouts, sulphurs, swallowtails, and whites have many options when feeding and landing. Many Florida homeowners even plant butterfly “favorites” in their gardens to attract our beautifully winged friends!

Around the abundant Florida lakes and most frequently in parks, reptiles like alligators, anoles, geckos, lizards, skinks, and turtles sunbathe and thrive in their warm natural habitat.

And in more rural wooded areas, mammal species enjoy the shaded environment… our protected Gopher turtles, armadillos, beavers, bobcats, deer, feral pigs, foxes, minks, moles, opossums, otters, panthers, pocket gophers, rabbits, raccoons, shrews, squirrels, and weasels all call the Florida landscape home!

Along Florida’s majestic coastal waterfront, dolphins, pelicans, manatees, and osprey thrive in our warm, tropical sunshine…sometimes our sea friends will swim right up to your boat to say hello!

As a general rule, we do not feed them and we get along marvelously; we only use cameras if we want to “shoot!” Here in Florida, we say that wildlife species are like puppies…if you don’t pull their tails, they don’t bite!

The truth is that alligators and humans have coexisted for centuries. As long as they both respect each other, they get along fine...
